PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This program is designed to provide education and training in area of health Informatics and medical record management. Participants will gain knowledge and experience required assuming duties of Health Informatics Technician within the Ministry of Health or private medical facilities. During the delivery of the program students will be introduced to Medical Information Sciences, Record Management and Administration, various medical information computer applications, hospital statistics, and medical communications.
PREREQUISITES
Completion of a science based high school diploma (certificate) and the successful completion of an aptitude test administered by the Department of Health Informatics. The applicant must show an acceptable knowledge of written and spoken English. Students who wish for an exemption in a specific course may apply to take a proficiency examination in that subject.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
On successful completion of the course the graduate will be able to:
1. Implement departmental services, operational and information systems for patient-related data
2. Assemble, organize, and maintain manual or automated medical record and other health information
3. Apply and follow existing policies for retrieval and retention of health information
4. Develop and monitor classifying, indexing, and coding of medical records according to ICD-10 classification system
5. Follow existing policies and regulations for the control and security of manual or automated health information
6. Follow procedures for maintaining confidentiality and security of manual and automated health information
7. Organize and display data for research projects, special studies, and evaluation programs
8. Evaluate and analyze medical record for quality and completeness
9. Analyze medical data statistically
10. Provide inpatient/outpatient medical record services
11. Conduct oneself in a professional and ethical manner by adhering to the AHIMA Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice
